Professor Folasade Ogunsola from the College of Medicine has emerged as the 13th Vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The appointment was announced at the end of a special meeting of the Council held on Friday, October 7, 2022.
Thus, Prof. Ogunsola, the Foundation Fellow of both the Nigerian Academy of Medicine Fellow of Academy of Medicine Specialties becomes the first female Vice-Chancellor of the 60-year-old university.
However, a statement from the Communications Unit of the University titled: “UNILAG Governing Council
Appoints New Vice-chancellor” read, “The Governing Council of the University of Lagos has approved the appointment of Professor
Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the University.
” The appointment of Professor Ogunsola is for five (5) years with effect from Saturday, November 12, 2022 to Thursday, November 11, 2027.
The single five-year tenure of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, is expected to end on Friday, November 1 2022.
Recall the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Sen. Lanre Tejuoso, had within the week announced that a new VC would emerge at the university’s College of Medicine in Idi-Araba, Lagos, during an event to mark the institution’s 60th anniversary.
Prof Ogunsola contested alongside other lecturers in the university from the Faculties of Management Sciences, Arts, Law, Sciences, and the College of Medicine .
They are Prof. Timothy Nubi of the Department of Estate Management, Faculty of Environmental Sciences; Abayomi Akinyeye, Department of History, Mathew Ilori and Adeyinka Adekunle both of the Department of Microbiology and Botany, Faculty of Sciences.
Others are Imran Smith, Faculty of Law; and Ayo Olowe, Department of Finance, Faculty of Management Sciences.
Who Is Folashade Ogunsola
Ogunsola is a professor of Medical Microbiology and a consultant clinical microbiologist and infection control for the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
Born in 1958, she holds a Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology, an MSc in Medical Microbiology with Distinction, and a Diploma in Biomedical Techniques from the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, among others.
A Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, West African College of Physicians, National Postgraduate Medical College in Pathology.
Ogunsola had served as the university’s acting Vice-Chancellor and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Development Services.
Besides, she had also served as the pioneer and only female Provost of the university’s College of Medicine.
She also served as a governing council member for three terms, ranking as the only one with such a number of years in the governing council among the contenders.
Ogunsola is said to have received various prestigious awards from both local and international bodies and has one hundred and 142 publications in reputable academic journals and has co-authored four books.
She has successfully supervised or co-supervised eight doctoral students and 61 master’s students.
Roll Call Of Former VCs
Professor Eni Njoku was the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the institution from 1962 to 1965.
He was followed by Professor Saburi Oladeni Biobaku as Vice-Chancellor of the institution from 1965 to 1972.
Next was Jacob Festus Adeniyi Ajayi who managed the institution from 1972 to 1978.
Babatunde Kwaku Adadevoh took over the mantle from 1978 to 1980.
It was the turn of Akinpelu Oludele Adesola. He was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of the institution from 1981 to 1988.
Prof. Nurudeen Oladapo Alao stepped in and managed the university from 1988 to 1995.
Jelili Adebisi Omotola was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of the institution from 1995 to 2000.
Emeritus Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of the institution from 2000 to 2007.
Next was Professor Tolu Olukayode Odugbemi, who was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of the institution from 2007 to 2010.
Professor Babatunde Adetokunbo Sofoluwe’s tenure was cut short due to death. He was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the institution from 2010- 2012.
He was succeeded by Prof. Rahmon Ade Bello, the 11th Vice-Chancellor. He was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the institution from 2012 to 2017.
The 12th and outgoing Vice-Chancellor is Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe. He was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of the institution in 2017.

The Vice-Chancellor is the principal academic and administrative officer of the University. He or she chairs the Council of the University, the General Board of the Faculties and the Finance Committee of the Council.
