The Socio Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) on Sunday issued a seven – day ultimatum to the Nigerian Government to reverse the deduction of the salaries of public university lecturers or “face legal action.”
The Non – governmental group conveyed this in a terse statement on its verified page on Twitter.
SERAP describes the deduction as “illegal” and argues that “paying lecturers half salaries for going on strike is unlawful, and a deliberate attempt to make ASUU a lame duck.”
The government had, in a statement on Saturday, explained that the lecturers were paid for the month of October pro-rata.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment, in the statement, added that the Minister, Dr. Chris Ngige, did not issue directives to the Accountant – General of the Federation to pay members of ASUU half salary, contrary to the remarks credited to it’s National President.
