An energy expert and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Protogy Global Services Limited, Engineer Ademola Agoro has advocated the transition to renewable energy for sustainable electricity supply in Nigeria.
Agoro, who is also at the helms of the affairs at Longi Engineering Limited also called for adequate maintenance and upgrade of existing network infrastructures for stable power supply in the country.
He made the call while delivering a lecture titled, “Harnessing the Possibilities in Renewable Energy for the Provision of Stable Electricity Supply in Nigeria” at the 9th College Lecture of the College of Engineering, Bells University of Technology, Ota last week.
Agoro noted that the decentalisation of embedded generations as well as providing an investor-friendly environment for embedded generations are the possible way forward for sustainable electricity supply in the country.
“Renewable energy resource is essentially inexhaustible energy resource on a human time scale. Irrespective of their being a device to harness this power, renewable energy passes through the environment as a current (wind), electromagnetic radiation (sunlight) or a flow (water),” he explained.
He listed renewable energy that could be harnessed to include solar photovoltaics, solar power plant, hydro energy, wind energy, tidal energy as well as biomass energy.
He charged the government to put appropriate policy and enforcement on gas pricing, pipeline ownership, exploration, production and distribution in place, adding that more funding support should be sought from the World Bank, Development Finance Institutions and Non-governmental organisations in order to support the alternative generation.
Also speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Oladele
Ojediran noted that the Lecture addressed the present topical issues, especially as they affect society and proffering solutions to them.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Dean of the College of Engineering of the institution, Professor Ojo Fayomi stated that the topic was most appropriate and topical, considering the challenge of instability of electricity supply and constant breakdown of the national grid in Nigeria.
The Bells University of Technology Annual College Lecture is one of the important events in the university and college calendar which focused on contributing to the critical important pursuit of numerous challenges facing humanity and how to provide a new solution to recurrent old problems.
