The Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos has expressed readiness to partner with the National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (NCEEC) in areas of Energy Research, Trainings, Curriculum Review and other areas of mutual benefits.
In this regard, the faculty as well as the NCEEC have proposed a 6-member Committee with the mandate to draft a Plan of Action which would also cover key areas such as Equipment evaluations to aid teaching and training purposes, prospects for programme collaborations as well as exchange opportunities especially in Energy Engineering.
The committee has two weeks to deliver on its mandate.
This formed part of outcomes during a courtesy visit paid by the Management team of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos, to the National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (NCEEC) situated on Oduduwa Drive, UNILAG, Akoka campus, Yaba on Monday, February 13, 2023.
The essence of the visit, according to the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor Obanisola Sodiq, was to identify with and assure the acting Director of the NCEEC, Dr Olawale Ajibola of the faculty’s support, establish partnership with the centre especially in the area of research in Energy Efficiency and Conservation as well as engage with the NCEEC as an industry player for inputs towards ongoing efforts for a curriculum review.
Prof. Sodiq who led the faculty management team on the visit said they were at the NCEEC complex in pursuit of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola’s vision of making UNILAG Future-Ready and grooming Fit-For-Purpose Workforce by exploring all available platforms to engender collaborations for students’ training and capacity building in energy efficiency and conservation.
While congratulating Dr Ajibola on the extension of his tenure as Acting Director of the National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (NCEEC), Prof. Sodiq solicited further inputs and support of the centre in meeting some strategic needs of the faculty.
In his remarks, the Acting Director, National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (NCEEC), Dr. Olawale Ajibola appreciated the Faculty of Engineering management team for the courtesy visit which he adjudged a gesture of love, accommodation and cooperation.
While responding to some of the issues raised by the Dean and some members of the faculty management team, Dr Ajibola noted that efforts were in full gear to explore existing Memorandum of Understanding between the NCEEC and the University of Lagos.
He reaffirmed the centre’s commitment towards pursuing the University management’s mandate on ensuring efficient consumption of energy on campus and announced ongoing efforts at the centre to commence Professional Degree Programmes in Energy Engineering. He noted that this would require inputs from the departments of Systems Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
While outlining series of training opportunities which are currently open to all categories of students of the university to include the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), Dr. Ajibola promised to leverage on the successes of his predecessor in pursuing a developmental agenda for the centre which will in turn impact the university community, he also assured of the NCEEC’s commitment to interventions towards improving facilities at the faculty.
There was a presentation by the Head of Research at the National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (NCEEC), Dr Babale Manasseh Shitta who took the faculty members through programmes, projects, activities, products, collaborations, and breakthroughs of the centre especially in improving energy conservation in UNILAG and its environs.
There were goodwill messages from members of the faculty management team as well as the Head of Administration, Office of International Relations, Partnerships and Prospects, University of Lagos, Mrs Nonyem Oguama who advocated externalization of research outputs so as to further foster international partnerships.
Management team members were later accorded a facility tour of the National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (NCEEC) by the Acting Director of the centre, Dr. Olawale Ajibola.
Established in 2008, the National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (NCEEC) domiciled in the University of Lagos is one of the six research centres under the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) charged with the responsibility of research in Energy Efficiency and Conservation. Its three-storey administrative building situated on Oduduwa Drive, opposite Engineering Workshop, Faculty of Engineering, was commissioned by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. (Senator) Adeleke Olorunnimbe Mamora on Thursday, November 10, 2022.
