The Kids and Teens Arm of the University of Lagos Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Lab (AIRLAB) formerly called AIROL, won big at the just-concluded FIRST Robotics Competition held between Monday, February 13 and Tuesday, February 14, 2023 in Lagos and Abuja.
The Competition featured various challenges including First Lego League (FLL) for kids between ages 8 and 12 years and First Tech Challenge (FTC) for teenagers between ages 13 and 16 years.
The Kids Team comprising eleven (11) pupils of the University of Lagos Women Society (ULWS) represented UNILAG in the FLL, clinching the Outstanding Engineering Award.
Members of the team include Akintuyi Tamilore; Ojo Opeoluwa; Agbeyo Abolaji; Ogunlade Jesupelumi; Olapoju Damilola; Yinka-Banjo Joseph; Adegbenjo Mayomipo; Amiolemenfe Michelle; Amina Rouna; Faniran Oluwadarasimi and Idowu-Samuel Moses.
At the FTC, UNILAG was represented by Team Contech comprising students from the International School, University of Lagos (ISL) and neighboring schools. They built robots from scratch which attempted several challenges/hurdles dealt them.

The challenges were aimed at inspiring and empowering students from different backgrounds, locations and schools to build robots that can solve problems and hence activate innovative minds.
Coordinated by the Head of the Robotics Laboratory, Dr. Chika Yinka-Banjo, both teams were coached by student volunteers at AIRLAB: Adebayo Boluwatife (FLL); Dikenwa David (FLL); Oluwatobi Anuoluwapo (FLL & FTC); Abdulsalam Lukmon (FTC); Roberts Inimabo (FTC).
The Teams were sponsored by ACCA Women’s Network Nigeria (ACCA WNN) group.
The Competition was brought to Nigeria by the Coderina EdTech Foundation, a major supporter/sponsor of the UNILAG AIRLAB.
FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a robotics community that prepares young people for the future through a suite of inclusive, team-based robotics programs for ages 4-18 (PreK-12) that can be facilitated in school or structured afterschool programs.
