As part of activities marking the year 2023 International Women’s Day, Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center (WARDC) in collaboration with Gender Development Initiative (GenDi), has sensitized female students on rape and it’s attendance consequences using the digital story telling technique.
The 2023 International Women’s Day with the theme, “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality” which was further broken down by the NGOs to “Story Telling (of survivors) In The Digital Space was held with female students of St. Peters’ College, Olomore in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
In her introductory message, the Program Officer for GenDi, Omoraka Ifeoluwa stated that the sensitisation program is aimed towards the goal of sustaining development, adding that the program was supported by the Ford Foundation.
She added that, “in this year’s edition, we are making a call to achieve a gender-equal world, where every woman, irrespective of her colour, tribe or race will be free from prejudice and discrimination. We are working towards am inclusive world”
Meanwhile, the facilitator, Temitope Alfred took the students through the instructions and interactive session where they shared experiences on rape, through story telling using drawings to express stories of survivors of gender based violence.
She also took the students on how girls can use digital skills positively to promote learnings and what should not be shared within the digital space.
The students however took turns, through their drawings to share stories of rape and gender based violence victims and how they survived the traumatic experience.
WARDC is a women’s right organisation in Nigeria founded by Dr. Abiola Akiyode. It provides pro-bono legal services for women victims of gender based violence and other women’s right abuses.
It’s collaborative partner, GenDi is an NGO founded by Prof. Mrs Olubunmi Ashimolowo, with focus on empowering children, youth and women by uplifting their socio-economic potentials.
