Dr. Ganiyu Abisoye Bamgbose of the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Lagos State University (LASU) has charged students to leverage more on employable skills acquisition, not unemployable certificates.
He said this while delivering a lecture at a seminar titled: “International Opportunities: Roadmap to Global Competitiveness”, organized by Lagos State University Centre for International Academic Engagements.
The seminar, which had over 300 participants comprising members of staff and students, was held at the Theatre Arts Auditorium, Faculty of Arts, Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos.
Dr. Bamgbose emphasized the importance of language proficiency in international settings and encouraged students to invest time and effort in learning foreign languages as this skill will greatly enhance good communication, cultural understanding and open doors to international opportunities.
Speaking further, the linguist affirmed” To succeed in a competitive and rapidly changing world, you must think critically, act creatively and remember that knowledge is product while certificate is receipt…You cannot leverage opportunity if you cannot manage your potential”.
He also encouraged participants to tap from the power of networking and emphasized the need for students to build a strong global network.
The Co-ordinator, Centre for International Academic Engagements, Lagos State University, Dr. Adefemi Yekini, who was represented by the Head of Operations, Miss. Aisha Lawal emphasized the importance of understanding the global landscape and harnessing international opportunities to enhance individual and collective competitiveness.
Dr. Yekini added that the seminar was also meant to enlighten prospective candidates seeking international academic scholarships/grants with guidance in writing their Statement of Purpose (S.A.P.) and Essays to meet the international standard.
