Professor Olugbenga Ige, the Vice Chancellor of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) has solicited the assistance of the Registrar, National Industrial Court(NIC), Barr. Olurotimi Williams-Daudu, to assist the varsity in its move for an increase in the approved quota of Law students by the Nigeria Law School.
He stated this during the NIC’s Registrar’s installation as the patron of the varsity’s Law Clinic.
The Vice-Chancellor revealed that only 70 students are currently approved for the University by the Law School per session, saying that the university is asking for an increase in the quota to 150.
He said: ”We will appreciate whatever assistance you can do to help us increase the number from 70 every year. By the time I want to admit 71, JAMB will just cross the last one, they say your quota is 70.
“Our law faculty is doing exceptionally well,our students are doing great, and our graduates are doing wonderfully fantastic.
“For us sir as university management, we will do everything possible to make sure that we provide infrastructure.
“In terms of capacity in the Faculty of Law, we have enough, we have several professors there, we have associate professors, senior lecturers, nearly all the lecturers in the faculty of law have Ph.D.”
In his acceptance speech, the NIC’s Registrar appreciated the honour bestowed on him, saying he would not take it for granted.
Barr. Daudu-Williams promised to do all within his reach to encourage and assist law students in their academics and for them to succeed as lawyers.
He said: “As I said, it is a humble experience for me and it is one thing I will never take for granted. I appreciate you all. I am grateful to the people at the Faculty of Law for finding me worthy of this honour.
“I will continue to see how to strengthen the Faculty of Law in terms of books and journals that would keep the students abreast with new trends in the legal profession in the country.”
In his address, the Dean, Faculty of Law, Barr. Olugbenga Oke explained that Akungba Law Clinic was a project of the Faculty of Law.
He disclosed that the Faculty invited NIC’s Registrar because eminent professionals were always invited to mentor the young lawyers and to encourage them to look up to people like him.
“What we do is to train our students in practical and we make them serve the community. Today has to honour one of the leading lights in the profession of law in Nigeria and that is the CR of Industrial Court as the patron of Akungba Law Clinic
“Because of our limited facility, the law school has pegged down the number of students we can send to law school every year to 70, so at the moment, we can only send 70 students.
“The campaign now is that law school should allow us to bring in more students Akungba Law is one of the best training grounds in Nigeria.
“The Council for legal education regulates all law programme in Nigeria and our quota has remained at 70, we have made a concerted effort to make sure that our quota increased, but the 70 is still maintained and our students are doing very well.
“In Nigeria today people that want to read law prefer Akungba because we have the capacity and we are hoping that it will be moved to 150,” he said.
