Three (3) University of Lagos students have been selected by the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) to represent Nigeria at the 31st FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China.
The Ag. Director of Sports, UNILAG, Dr. Joseph Awoyinfa has also been selected by NUGA to lead the team to the Games.
Mr. Ayuba Daniel Ikko-Allah, a 400-level student of the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Science,
Miss Kehinde Oreoluwa Oyeniyi, a 300-level student of the Department of Business Education, Faculty of Education and Sewekan Oluwasegun Thovoethin, a 300-level student of the Department of Human Kinetics, Faculty of Education.
The trio who had won gold medals in their respective sport categories – table tennis men single, table tennis female and 400m during the NUGA Games hosted by the University of Lagos in 2022, were selected following a thorough evaluation process by the Association.
Mr. Ayuba, Miss Kehinde and Mr. Oluwasegun will represent the country in Table Tennis and Athletics respectively.
They are expected to leave for China on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 and return on August 11, 2023.
The trio along with Dr. Awoyinfa and the Chairman, UNILAG Sports Council, Prof. Afolabi Lesi paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Ayodele Atsenuwa at her office on the 8th floor of the Senate House.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, congratulates Ayuba Daniel Ikko-Allah, Oyeniyi Kehinde Oreoluwa and Thovoethin Sewekan Oluwasegun on the successful selection to represent Nigeria in Chengdu 2021 and looks forward to their grand return with gold medals for the country.
The International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games, tagged “Chengdu 2021” had initially been scheduled for the summer of 2021, but was rescheduled following the postponement of the Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020. The Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games is set to take place between Friday, July 28, 2023 and Tuesday, August 8, 2023. The Games will feature 18 sports and 269 medal events.
It will be recalled that the University of Lagos hosted the 26th NUGA Games in March 2022, wherein the University emerged first runner-up.
