… As Surveillance Officer Donates Drugs To Camp Clinic
The global health regulatory body, World Health Organization (WHO) Thursday sensitized 2023 Batch “B” Stream I Orientation Course corps members on Acute Flaccid Paralysis.
The sensitisation exercise was hosted by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the temporary Orientation Camp in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.
The sensitization was carried out by the Surveillance Officer of WHO in Lagos State, Dr. Memuna Esan.
According to the Public Health physician, Nigeria got eradicated of polio in 2020 when the World Health African Region health certified Nigeria free of Wild Polio Virus.
According to her, there are lots of work to be done as one of the causes of acute onset of weakness or paralysis in the extremities of children is Poliovirus as one of the numerous causes of Acute Flaccid Paralysis.
She reinforced that Acute Flaccid Paralysis other causes are transverse myelitis, traumatic neuritis, Coxsackie virus, guillain-barre syndrome, echovirus and other enteroviruses.
While speaking on the key expectations of a clinician in eradicating AFP, she said a clinician is anyone who can detect the disease and report it.
She urged the corps members to be part of the campaign in AFP case definition, conduct peer/client sensitization, know what to do once an AFP case is detected, know their AFP focal person (if applicable), know the contact numbers to call once an AFP case is detected and act accordingly.
She said further that the roles of the clinicians will be; immunization, surveillance(case detection and reporting, case investigation), Change agents, Health information dissemination, Role models in the community and peer sensitization.
She said other diseases that need equal response from the corps members are; measles, yellow fever, and neonatal tetanus.
Meanwhile, as a first time visitor to the camp, Dr. Memuna Esan donated Vitamin C 100mg ×2000 tablets, Paracetamol 500mg×2000 tablets, Tab. Act 20/120mg(H-ITEN)-30, Tab. Act 20/120mg(FALMA)-15, Tab. Multivitamin ×1000 tablets -1, caps-Amoxycilin 500mg×10 cards – 5, and Tab. Act 20/120mg(welfast)-5, to the Orientation Camp Clinic for the use of corps members and officials.
