Babcock University (BU), Ilisan, Ogun State at the weekend hooded no fewer than 164 doctoral candidates during the institution’s 12th postgraduate convocation.
The successful doctoral candidates were made up of 93 males and 71 females.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ademola Tayo, charged the graduands to take advantage of the expertise acquired to dive into some of the wide-ranging societal problems and to stand tall in their academic and professional pursuits.
He reminded the doctoral graduands that obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy was not the end of learning and enjoined them to collaborate with scholars along various disciplines to arrive at cutting-edge research.
“As you celebrate your achievement, be reminded that your certificate is valuable to the extent you use your knowledge to bring about positive change in society with a high sense of integrity and honesty. Remember, teamwork is the catchword if you are to make your mark in your profession.
“This year’s doctoral candidates presented for hooding was the highest since the establishment of the college; the first time a couple would be hooded as doctoral graduands as well as the first time the College presented doctoral candidates for hooding in Nursing Sciences, Finance and Economics since its establishment, ” he added.
The VC disclosed that among the hooded candidates were the highly placed personalities in academia, the corporate world, the government circle and the judiciary.
The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, represented by the Secretary to State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi commended Babcock University for rising to the challenge, saying “The list of candidates hooded reflected the areas of human capacity needed for the continued development of the society.
He added, “We cannot have this large number of higher institutions in the state, and also produce quite several Ph.D. graduates yearly, and yet still keep seeking specialists in various sectors of the economy.”
The governor charged the graduands to be curious, remain open to new ideas and continue to challenge the status quo, urging them to extend their brilliance beyond academic achievements to leading meaningful and fulfilling lives.
