…Says Overall Foreign Students Population Remains 1.01 Percent
The International Students Recruitment Officer of the University of Ghana, Accra, Mr. Emmanuel Yaw Dankwa has debunked the report by a blog, Barristerng.com alleging that 60 percent of the student population in the university are Nigerians.
Speaking to journalists at the Consulate Office, Mr. Dankwa disclosed that the blogger was not part of the media at the meeting with the Consul-General of Ghana, Mrs. Samata Gifty Bukari in Lagos.
Officials of the university who are in Nigeria to get new students for the university for the new admission year had a meeting with the media in which the blogger was absent.
Dankwa said the university was surprised that a medium not part of the meeting with the Consul-General of Ghana published such baseless statistics.
“Barristerng.com had published the report with the headline, “60% of students of the University of Ghana are Nigerians – Official”.
He explained that students of Nigerian origin only form the highest number of the international student population in the university, saying the overall percentage of foreign students stands at 1.01 while Ghanaians are 98.99 in enrollment.
The report said that despite the decreased admission numbers in the past five years, Nigerians constituted 60 percent of students in the university.
He clarified, “Nigerian students do not form 60 percent of our total students population they only form the highest number of our international students population.”
He added that globally the number of international students have reduced significantly over the past five years all over the world, with COVID-19, economic hardship, with other forms of disasters.
“But despite this, Ghana has a good number of international students and out of this number majority of these, I will say are from Nigeria, especially in our university. ”
The university, therefore, urged stakeholders and the general public to disregard any report stating otherwise from the university statistics.
