The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, will on Monday 11th Monday to 25th December 2023 host the 67th National Council on Education.
Briefing newsmen at the conference room of the Ministry at Alausa, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun said the theme of the meeting that will be chaired by the Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman is “Addressing the Challenges of Policy Implementation: A Panacea for the Achievement of Education 2030 Agenda”.
According to him, the National Council on Education is a statutory meeting where major decisions that have to do with the education sector are taken and assured that the state is ready to play host to the NCE meeting as the highest policymaking body on education in Nigeria saddled with the responsibility of ratification of the recommendations.
Mr. Alli-Balogun who is the pioneer Commissioner in the new Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education said delegates expected at the NCE are ministries, agencies and government parastatals that include officials from the Federal and State Ministries of Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology; the FCT Education Secretariat, Federal and State Education Parastatals and other agencies.
Responding to questions on expectations from the Ministry, the Commissioner said he had a mindset to further boost and expand the scope of technical and vocational education in the state in line with the theme agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He assured that the Ministry will establish additional technical colleges and vocational learning centres to accommodate and provide access for quality training to more youths, saying no youth would be allowed to lazy around.
“We want to take as many youths that is possible away from the streets and expose them to TVET education so that they can be more useful to themselves and society at large and become employers of labour.
He assured that Lagos would continue to seek opportunities to provide additional computers to enhance teaching and further expose students in public schools to the use of computers.
The Commissioner thanked Honourable Olufemi Hakeem Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for boosting computer education in Surulere, saying that the provision of digital learning facilities will enhance the teaching of languages and other subjects.
Addressing the issue of retirement ages for teachers in the state, the Commissioner explained that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is through with lecturers in the state-owned tertiary institutions, saying that it is an ongoing issue that will also involve teachers in basic and secondary schools after necessary consultations with stakeholders.
Speaking about illicit use and abuse among youths, the Commissioner expressed worries, saying that he addresses the issues anytime he is within an assembly of youths.
He commended the Ministry of the Environment for demolishing shanties and ghettos located within communities where schools are located, adding that sensitization exercises would be intensified through community leaders, partnership with the Police and establishment of safety and anti-drug clubs in schools as part of measures to tackle the menace.
He added, “We are not stopping at these measures. We are also toying with the idea of barring the location and sale of beer and alcoholic drinks near the school environment to prevent students from temptation to experiment with drinking habits.”
The establishment of the NCE was born out of the need to have a non-partisan, national and strategically placed organisation that would “address a wide range of issues impacting the education process.” The aim is to ensure continuity in policy development as well as to facilitate greater community involvement in the management of educational institutions.
