Professor Adenike Osofisan, Africa’s first woman professor of Computer Science will deliver the maiden convocation lecture of Trinity University, Lagos.
The lecture marks a series of activities marking the 1st and second convocation of the university at its Sabo, Yaba campus.
Vice-chancellor of the institution, Professor Clement Kolawole announced on Wednesday during a pre-convocation press conference to announce activities for the joint convocation tagged: ” Convoking a Galaxy of Trinity Stars!
According to him, the convocation has a theme: “Disruptive Technology: The Ambiguous Friend?
Professor Osofisan specializes in data mining and knowledge management and is renowned for her contribution to the field of computing and knowledge advancement.
She is the pioneer president of the Nigeria Women in Information Technology and was inducted into the Nigeria Women Hall of Fame in 2019.
She also served as the first female president and chairman of the governing council of the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria.
The VC said the erudite scholar would Interrogate the theme of whether information technology is a friend or a foe, saying it will be a deep, dissecting and dispassionate analysis of the true identity of computing and information technology in our current age; analysis of its blessings and evils, and framework for its right application for a better world.
He disclosed that the lecture will be chaired by Deacon Adebowale Tade, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Trinity University and a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and West Africa College of Pharmacists.
The convocation will climax on Friday, February 23, 2024 as the management will present 20 outstanding graduates of the institution with First Class Honours degrees.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the 20 who graduated with First Class degrees are among a total of 72 pioneer and second sets of graduates from the five-year-old university across eight disciplines.
As part of the ceremonies, Professor Kolawole disclosed that Mrs Florence Ajimobi, the immediate past First Lady of Oyo State/CEO of Grandex Nigeria Limited and Dr John Obaro, Founder/Group Managing Director of SystemSpecs Holdings Limited
were found worthy to bag the university Honorary Doctorate based on their respective sterling contributions to education, humanity, and the economy at large.
Also, Prince Samuel Adedoyin, a renowned philanthropist and founder of the Doyin Group of Companies, will be formally decorated as the Chancellor of the university at the event.
The VC declared, “The convocation shall be for the graduating students in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 academic sessions. We have nine students graduating in the 2021/22 set, with two making First Class, while 64 will be graduating in the 2022/23 academic session, with 18 making First Class. The two sets of graduates become the first set of alumni of Trinity University.
“They are the beginning of our vision and the evidence of our grace. They are a demonstration that it is possible and that the possibilities are endless.
“In them, we are producing world-class citizens who can impact the world in knowledge, skill and character. They are going into the world guided by the sound value system that Trinity University has ingrained in them, including godliness, academic excellence, professionalism, responsibility, integrity, leadership and discipline.
“We are releasing them to the world as the true stars that they are. It is the reason why the theme of this event has been christened, “Convoking a Galaxy of Trinity Stars!
He said the university presently runs 16 programmes with full accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and an array of professional courses.
He saluted the foresight of the promoters of the University and the Trinity Group for their vision, drive and dedication.
“May I also seize this opportunity to acknowledge the pioneering work of my predecessor in office, the late Professor Charles Korede Ayo, who was Vice-Chancellor between May 2019 and August 2023. May his soul rest in peace,” he added.
