The University of Benin, Edo State and the Federal College of Education(Technical), Akoka, Lagos, have matriculated 190 students for its 2023/2024 academic session for the affiliate degree programme.
Speaking during the matriculation ceremony, Provost, FCE(T), Dr Wahab Azeez, explained that 83 students matriculated for various programmes in the 100 level while 107 students were admitted as Direct Entry students making a total of 190.
The Provost welcomed the management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and the matriculating students of the University in affiliation with the Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka, to the 2023/2024 matriculation ceremony.
Dr Azeez acknowledged the interest, support and logistics that have been provided by the principal Officers of the University, the staff of the departments of Vocational and Technical Education, Psychology and Curriculum Studies, Educational Studies and Management in the Faculty of Education towards the success of our Degree Programmes in the College.
The Provost, who decried the dwindle in the 190 students for the 2023/2024 academic session against previous exercises, explained that matriculating ceremonies are undertaken in all higher institutions all over the world to formally admit students into Academic programmes.
“The ceremony is significant in several ways. Firstly, it is only at matriculating ceremonies that students offered provisional admission are formally presented and declared bonafide students of the College.
“Secondly, as bonafide students, you are to take the ”Matriculating Oath” and sign the Admission Register as a student and maintain an allegiance to the College authority, rules and regulations. Thirdly, it is a ceremony at which fresh students are fully integrated into the academic community.
“Finally, the ceremony is the climax of a series of activities designed to introduce fresh students to the College systems and ensure that they derive the greatest benefits from the resources available in the College”.
He rejoiced with the matriculating students for being among the lucky few to have been offered the opportunity of acquiring a Bachelor of Science Degree or Bachelor of Arts, Degree in Education from the Great University of Benin, in affiliation with the College of Education (Technical) Akoka, Lagos.
In the same vein, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof Lillian Salami, encouraged the students for the privilege to formally pledge allegiance to the authorities of the University of Benin and its affiliate, the Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka, Lagos through subscription to the matriculation oath.
The Vice-Chancellor, represented by Prof. O.K. Omoroguiwa, the Dean Faculty of Education, urged
the matriculants to take their learning seriously by leaving no stone unturned in the responsibility of moulding their character and imparting requisite knowledge to achieve their desired goal.
The VC acknowledged the capacity of FCE, T, Akoka to attract students and discharge its duties to the young ones so that they will become models in learning and character.
The Director of Degree Programmes, Dr S.A. Adebayo commended parents of the matriculating students and urged the fresh men and women to be disciplined in the pursuit of their primary mission at the College, saying both institutions have both the infrastructure and capacity to deliver world-class learning.
The highlight of the occasion was the symbolic oath-taking exercise and an address by the Degree Students President, Comrade Gbolahan Ajose who wished his college a College and University experience.
