The apprehension stemmed from reports of armed gunmen allegedly invading Akesan Community Grammar School in Iperu with the intent to abduct five children.
Concerned parents, fueled by anxiety and uncertainty, swiftly descended upon various schools in the locality, ferrying their wards away from potential danger.
Despite the heightened tension, the Principal of Akesan Community Grammar School, Mrs. A. O. Yusuf, vehemently refuted claims of a kidnapping incident within the school premises.
According to Mrs. Yusuf, the panic was sparked by a woman who visited the school seeking confirmation about the safety of her grandchild, allegedly rumoured to be among the kidnapped students.
Despite assurances from the school administration, parents remained resolute in their decision to withdraw their children from the institution, citing safety concerns.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the atmosphere of fear and unease in Iperu follows recent incidents of violence and criminality in the region.
Just weeks prior, gunmen reportedly attacked Ajadeh Event Centre in Iperu Remo, resulting in the death of a lecturer from Babcock University, Yinka Olowojobi, and the abduction of two others.
Additionally, travelers along the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode Expressway fell victim to armed assailants, with reports of fatalities and abductions raising alarm across the state.
However, amidst the turmoil, law enforcement agencies have taken decisive action to combat the wave of criminality plaguing the region.
Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command successfully neutralized two kidnappers during a daring rescue operation on the Sagamu-Ijebu-Ode-Benin expressway.
The operation, conducted in collaboration with local vigilantes, resulted in the liberation of three Indian nationals who had been abducted earlier in May.
She said “during the rescue mission, the police said it seized a substantial sum of money totaling N7.9 million, along with 1500 Indian Rupees, suspected to be part of the ransom collected from previous victims.
“The DPO of Ilisan when he got to the scene of the incident saw two vehicles pierced with bullets; a Lexus Jeep 300 with registration number LND 640 DY, the driver’s name is Chilaka Lugard and another Lexus Jeep 350 with registration number LSR 996 JF belonging to Kingsley Chineme. Inside this Lexus 350 car was found a cross bag with N113,000, two iPhones; an iPhone Six and an iPhone Eleven Promax.
“There was also a corpse of an unidentified man who was shot in the head.
“The third vehicle was loaded with plantains and the driver who was among those abducted but has regained freedom was later allowed to go with the vehicle. The other Lexus vehicles have been taken to Ilishan Police Station”.
