Members of the National Youth Service Corps serving in Bauchi State on Tuesday offered free medical services to Zalanga community in Ganjuwa local government area of Bauchi state.
Speaking during the medical outreach, the State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Rifkatu Yakubu, stated that the medical outreach was an intervention of the corps members’ Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers which is a quarterly free medical services and health initiative programme designed by the NYSC to reach out to rural communities.
The Coordinator said that the outreach was open to more than 500 members of the community even as she highlighted the importance of HIRD and how the scheme had been helpful to rural communities, especially those who lacked access to medical facilities and services.
She noted that some of the ailments to be attended to, free of charge, includes malaria, typhoid, hypertension, diarrhea, cholera, and diabetes, among others.
According to her, any other ailment that could not be handled by the Corps’ Medical Volunteers would be referred to a more competent hospital for treatment.
“This exercise is aimed at giving medical assistance and free drugs to the less-privileged in the community.
“Let me use this opportunity to appeal to religious and community leaders to continue to support the NYSC in its efforts to complement the federal government’s efforts at enhancing health care delivery across the country. We urge all members of this community to avail themselves in order to benefit”Yakubu said.
Speaking on behalf of the residents, the village head of the community, Alhaji Yusuf Mohammed expressed gratitude to the scheme for bringing the medical outreach to the area.
He said that the outreach will help in addressing some of the health needs of the people as rural dwellers face a lot of challenges in accessing healthcare services in urban areas due to the cost of transportation.
“The entire people of Zalanga are eternally grateful to the scheme for this kind gesture and I would like to call on the members of the community to come out so as to benefit from this exercise” he stated
Members of other communities around Zalanga such as Gagira and Kampannin kutare turned up for the outreach.
