The Department of Political Science, Lagos State University in collaboration with Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Programme (CADFP) on Wednesday, 10th and Thursday, 11th July 2024 held a two-day Intensive Workshop on Academic Writing for Postgraduate Students and young faculty members at the Abubakar Momoh Moot Parliament, Faculty of Social Sciences, Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos.
The Dean, Faculty of Social Science, Prof. Olufemi Lawal, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the department of Political Science for imbibing the continuity culture, adding that the workshop is unprecedented in the history of the Faculty.
In his words, “Writing is a talent, but academic writing is a skill that must be cultivated”. He also advised participants that in getting their writings to first rated journals, there is a need for them to participate in international conferences.
The 2-day workshop started with the topic “Provoking Academic Writing” by Prof. Kayode Soremekun.
In his lecture, he averred that a good writer must not isolate himself or herself away from the world.
Other lectures include “Academic Writing Process” presented by Dr Ibrahim Aliyu.
Aliyu, In his lecture, explained that Academic writing is all about how intellectuals write their thoughts and observations on varying numbers of issues.
“It is the style used in the academic setting to convey complex ideas, research findings, and analysis in a clear and concise way,” he added.
The third lecture, “Shifting Paradigm in Academic Writing” was presented by Prof. Sabella Abidde.
He analysed that there is a need to avoid plagiarism and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to write papers.
He stated : “…the sooner young and emerging scholars learn to be creative, original and engage in critical writing the better the academic world will be. While some plagiarism could be unintentional, it is imperative to know that such carelessness, intentional or not, could negatively impact one’s career and career path.”
Other papers delivered at the workshop include “The Place of Publishing in the Scientific Community” by Prof. Onipede Wusu and “Writing a Research Atticle” by Dr Bashir Kolawole.
The intensive training was well attended by members of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Postgraduate Students of the department, and all other invited guests from the University.
