Distinguished Senator Akinteye Babatunde,
President of the Senate, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Headquarters, on Saturday commiserated with the families of pupils and staff of Saint Academy in Jos, Plateau State affected by the earning morning collapse of the school building.
The school building collapsed on Friday morning resulting in the death of about 17 persons, injury on many and the trapping of others under the rubble of the building .
Comrade Akinteye said, “We express our deep sadness over the tragic incident that occurred at Saint Academy in Jos, the state capital, on Friday, where a building collapse has led to the loss of 17 lives and left over 120 individuals trapped.
“This devastating event took place around 8:30 a.m, during school hours, when students and teachers were in their classes.
“Our hearts go out to the families of the deceased and all those affected by this calamity. We extend our heartfelt condolences and stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time.”
He lauded the spirited efforts of the rescue teams that have worked tirelessly to evacuate the injured students and teachers to various hospitals within Jos.
However, Senator Akinteye, who prayed for the repose of the departed souls, added that the calamity was avoidable if proper construction practices had been adhered to.
“The school’s location near a riverbank may have compromised the structural integrity of the building.This highlights the importance of constructing educational facilities in safe and secure locations.
“We urge the government to take immediate action to prevent such tragedies in the future. It is imperative that thorough inspections and regular monitoring of school buildings are conducted to ensure they meet safety standards. The safety of our students and educators must be a top priority,” Akinteye said.
Reiterating its uncompromising resolve to the safety of students and educators, NANS called on the authorities to hold accountable those responsible for the negligence that led to this disaster, saying Justice must be served and steps taken to prevent a recurrence of such an unfortunate event.
Comrade Akinteye added, “We extend our deepest sympathies to all affected families and pledge our support in advocating for safer educational environments across the nation.”
