Alarming statistics from the Federal University Dutse (FUD) reveal that 70% of students in the Department of Mathematics have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of less than 2.5, placing them in the third class category.
This troubling figure has led to the department being colloquially labelled as the “centre of carryovers” due to the high number of students needing to repeat courses.
Dr. Umar Abdullahi, Head of the Department of Mathematics, expressed his concerns: “These statistics are troubling and indicate a need for a thorough review of our teaching methods, curriculum, and student support systems. We must ensure that our students are adequately prepared and supported to succeed in their studies.”
Several factors have been identified as potential contributors to this high rate of low CGPAs among mathematics students, including teaching methods, curriculum issues, and inadequate student support.
