OGUN – Covenant University, located in Otta, Ogun State, recently matriculated a total of 2,449 new students for the 2024/2025 academic session in both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs.
The university also welcomed its first cohort of students for the Open and Distance e-learning platform during this session.
The matriculation ceremony took place in the university’s chapel and was presided over by Dr. David Oyedepo, the Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Regents, along with Prof. Timothy Anake, the Vice-Chancellor.
The event was attended by prominent members of the Board of Regents, university officials, and Deans from both postgraduate studies and various colleges.
In his welcoming address, Dr. Oyedepo extended a warm greeting to the incoming students, emphasizing the university’s commitment to shaping individuals with a long-term vision.
He encouraged the new entrants to embrace their academic journey and strive to become world changers.
“We have, in this community, potential world changers in the making. My prayer is that none of you will feel out of place here. May God’s purpose in bringing you here be fully realized. This reform mandate is the foundation of our philosophy, which focuses on a transition from mere form to skill, knowledge, and empowerment—freedom towards building a sustainable future, and moving from legalism to realism.”
Dr. Oyedepo highlighted the university’s seven core values: spirituality, possibility mentality, capacity building, responsibility, integrity, diligence, and sacrifice.
He urged the new students to uphold integrity in all their endeavours, cautioning that examination malpractice is treated as a serious offence, resulting in immediate expulsion from the university.
“Our three-fold mandate is reflected in our tailored programs based on the Total Man Concept (TMC), which includes Entrepreneurial Development Studies (EDS), Leadership Development Studies (LDS), and Towards a Total Graduate (TTG),” he explained.
He further clarified that TMC entails learning to live life fully and developing problem-solving skills; EDS equips students to find legitimate means of earning a living; LDS focuses on cultivating new leaders; while TTG serves as a Life-Coach Program.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Anake, stated that the matriculation marks the beginning of the students’ academic journeys and the start of a purposeful and fulfilling life at Covenant University.
He reiterated the institution’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of leaders who are prepared to address real-world challenges and drive positive change globally.
