LAGOS – The Lagos State University (LASU), on Thursday, expressed willingness to collaborate with some Indian universities for improved learning and research.
The vice-chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, made this known while receiving an Indian delegation in her office at the university’s main campus, Ojo.
She said that LASU was prepared for collaborations and partnerships that would enhance growth.
The vice-chancellor urged the delegation to outline possible areas of collaboration with LASU, adding that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be signed to formalise the relationship and unlock growth opportunities.
The delegation was led by Dr G. Thiruvasagam, provost of the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) University based in Chennai, India.
He was accompanied by Capt. Chandra Sekhar, Principal of AMET City College.
Thiruvasagam said that AMET University was one of India’s premier specialised institutions.
He said the institution offered courses across disciplines such as marine engineering, mechanical engineering and petroleum engineering.
“Others are shipping and logistics, data science, artificial intelligence and robotics.
“These diverse fields present numerous opportunities for collaboration between AMET and LASU, particularly on degree programmes, faculty and student exchanges, cultural interactions, and broader initiatives,” he said.
LASU vice-chancellor also met with a delegation from Donias Global Consultants, a private organisation working under the “Study in India” initiative.
The five-member team led by Diwesh Mishra, director of the project, sought to establish a link between Nigerian and Indian tertiary education systems, aligning with the Indian government’s push for increased international studies.
Mishra said that the “Study in India” initiative was aimed at promoting educational ties between Nigeria and India.
“This is also aimed at facilitating student mobility, knowledge exchange, and capacity-building efforts,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the discussion culminated in an agreement to pursue an MoU to outline the framework for collaboration.
The meeting was facilitated by Prof. Olawale Lawal of the Department of History and International Studies, LASU.
NAN also reports that the university on Monday formally admitted 12,590 students for its 2024/2025 academic session, warning them to shun indiscipline and cultism.
More than 50,000 people had applied for admission into LASU for the academic session but only 12,590 were successful.
