The University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State, has admitted a total of 170 new students into various degree programmes through its affiliation with the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka, in Lagos, for the 2024/2025 academic year.

The matriculation ceremony took place recently at the expansive multi-purpose auditorium of the FCE(T), Akoka and was witnessed by the Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Osamede Omorogiuwa, along with the  Acting Provost of FCE(T), Dr. Oluwatoyin Miller, key management staff of the foremost Technical College and parents.

During the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor shared some encouraging words with the students, urging them to stay focused and dedicated to their studies while also participating in other meaningful activities.

He reminded them to cherish the sacrifices their families have made for their education.

Prof. Omoregie assured everyone that FCE(T) has all the resources they need for a fantastic academic experience, just like their peers at UNIBEN’s main campus in Benin City, saying they would graduate as thoroughly trained graduate teachers who can compete and make a meaningful impact in the country and beyond.

He also emphasized the quality of the training and the impressive certificates they would receive—a sure sign of their hard work and commitment.

Additionally, he stressed the importance of following the rules and regulations of FCE(T), which align closely with those of UNIBEN.

He cautioned the students against engaging in any negative behaviours, like exam malpractice or cultism, reminding them that both institutions are serious about maintaining a safe and respectful environment.

In his speaking note, the Acting Provost, Dr Oluwatoyin Miller, disclosed that among the new students, 123 have advanced to 200-level as direct entry candidates in various programmes, while others are starting out at 100-level.

Dr. Miller encouraged the students to set high academic and personal standards for themselves. He emphasized that this partnership between UNIBEN and FCE(T) is all about providing quality education to our youth, who will, in turn, share their knowledge with others.

He added, “University Education is an inheritance parents should yearn to bequeath their children. Therefore, your parents, in furtherance of their struggle to ensure they give you a sound education, have succeeded in taking you to another level of your educational pursuit.

“The onus is on you all to reciprocate their gesture through commensurate efforts and results to justify their investments in you.

“You are, therefore, enjoined to work hard, and there is a synergy between hard work and Godliness. If you read well and pray, the end result will be a success.

“Today’s matriculation provides an opportunity for you, our freshers, who have gained admission into various programmes, to be officially inducted as students of the Academic Community. This ceremony is solemn as it requires you to pledge your allegiance to the Authority of the College,” he added.

The Ag. The provost congratulated all the new students on their admission and assured them that the college was ready to support them with excellent resources to make their educational journey fulfilling and enjoyable.

The highlight of the matriculation ceremony was the administration of the Matriculation Oath and the signing of the Matriculation Register.
