Research in Agriculture crucial, as the bed rock of national development to unlock agricultural potential, drive economic growth, boost food security and ensure sustainable development.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Bolu Owotomo, stated this at the opening ceremony of the 2025 College of Agricultural Research Fair and Exhibition, themed: “Research in Agriculture, the Bedrock of National Development ‘ at the College of Agricultural Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Aiyetoro said the theme echoes the vision of the present administration.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Kehinde Jokotoye, Owotomo explained that research informs, shape practices and drive investment, adding that the Ministry remains committed to promoting research backed policies and supporting every effort that enhances productivity, food security and rural prosperity.
He applauded the people behind the initiative, describing them as touch bearers of the country’s agricultural transformation, stressing that research would make farmers overcome challenges, such as postharvest losses, climate change, and low productivity.
The Commissioner commended the synergy and collaboration between academia and institutions such as International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and Agro -Allied Industries, emphasised that innovations, collaboration, and practical transformation of the agricultural sector would ensure food security, job creation, and poverty reduction.
Speaking, Commissioner for Forestry, Engr. Oludotun Taiwo, represented by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Adekunle Oyesanwe, affirmed that the nation stand to benefit more if stakeholders could harness the transformative power of research in agriculture, noting that this would further boost the economic impact.
He added that the Prince Dapo Abiodun’s administration had been laying a foundation of more resilient, prosperous and sustainable agricultural sector through partnership with research institutions, farmer dedication, forestation projects and investments in agro industrial parks.
Responding, Vice Chancellor, Olabisi Onabanjo University , Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, represented by the Provost , College of Agricultural Sciences , Ayetoro, Prof. Adewale Onasanya, said the programme signifies the institutions renewed commitment to make agriculture more responsive to the socio-economic needs of the people by showcasing ongoing innovations in value addition, livestock, aquaculture, agro processing and extension services.
