Students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University have raised the alarm over alleged extortion going on in the institution.
The angry students are therefore calling on the school Management under the leadership of Prof Carol Umeobi, whom they described as a true mother, to look into the matter.
The alleged ongoing extortion, the students alleged, is at the Management Information Communication Technology Unit ( MICTU), where the thumb printing for Computer-Based Tests is ongoing.
According to a publication, Razor, the students were being charged up to 10,000 naira, when the exercise was supposed to be free.
A student from Ogisi, who pleaded anonymity, said the office treats the students as if they were animals.
”At times we arrive at the centre as early as 5.30 a.m. and stay till evening without any success, though, because of the crowd.
”But the most annoying thing is the way they collect between 5,000 and 10,000 naira gratification from the ‘yahoo yahoo’ boys and others whose parents are well-to-do anytime they arrive.
“When such students arrive, the school security will start chasing us away like primary school students with a cane to make way for those who collect the money.
“It’s painful. The Management should intervene and save us from such harassment and intimidation” he said
The thump printing started sometime ago but has been shifted to 18 July
