A section of Pentagon Lodge, a privately owned three-storey student hostel near Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State, partially collapsed on Friday afternoon, triggering panic among the student community.
Eyewitnesses reported that cracks appeared in the affected block prior to the incident, prompting several occupants to vacate their rooms before the structure caved in.
The collapse occurred during lecture hours, which meant most students were away attending classes, sparing lives.
No injuries or deaths have been confirmed as of Saturday evening, though students’ belongings—especially of those who had travelled out of town—remain trapped under the rubble.
The Ebonyi State Government responded swiftly by sealing the building and other nearby structures within the complex, directing all residents to evacuate immediately.
Authorities have arranged temporary alternative accommodation within the university and launched an investigation and integrity assessment into the cause of the collapse.
The Ministry of Capital City Development, together with other relevant agencies and AE-FUNAI’s management, are coordinating ongoing emergency measures and student welfare efforts.
The incident has reignited concern over the safety of private student accommodations and compliance with building regulations in the state.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Elom Iyke Ubochi, expressed gratitude for the timing of the event, emphasizing the importance of strict oversight and urging affected students to report any losses to the Dean of Student Affairs for proper documentation and assistance.
As investigations commence, both state authorities and the student body are calling for stronger enforcement of construction standards and improved oversight to prevent future tragedies.
