A team of 11 medical students from Babcock University’s Benjamin S. Carson College of Health and Medical Sciences made a significant impact at the Consortium of New Sub-Saharan African Medical Schools (CONSAMS) Conference 2025.
The event was held at the Technical University of Mombasa, Kenya.
The students- Ugwuagbo Stephanie Nmesoma, Winifred Fagbenro Olajumoke, Onasanya Toluwalase Esther, Aina Itunuoluwa Itohan, Davies Fehintolaoluwa Emuobo-Esiri, Alalade Olorunwa Barnabas, Eziokwu Benita Dabeluchukwu, Umeh-Kenneth Mirabel Chinecherem, Ojichukwujife Lawrence Chuka-Utazi, Oluwatobiloba Aweda and Samuel Ayomide presented 12 abstracts based on their research work and showcasing their contributions to pressing health challenges.
Their research span artificial intelligence, planetary health, antimicrobial resistance, medical education reform, and pandemic preparedness.
Some of the specific topics presented include: – “Impact of AI-Related Fears on Specialty Preferences among Clinical Medical Students in Southwest Nigeria” by Ugwuagbo Stephanie Nmesoma and colleagues- “Leveraging AI-Driven One Health Surveillance in Sub-Saharan Africa” by Winifred Fagbenro Olajumoke and colleagues- “AI Integration and Technology Acceptance in Medical Education in Sub-Saharan Africa” by Onasanya Toluwalase Esther and colleagues.
The conference provided a platform for young medical scholars to showcase their work and exchange ideas with professors and doctors from across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Beyond the presentation, three of them, Ojichukwujife Lawrence Chuka-Utazi, Oluwatobiloba Aweda, and Eziokwu Benita Dabeluchukwu were appointed to pioneer the CONSAMS Student Council, while another, Priscilla Bakare, secured the Best Abstract Award.
Additionally, Prof. John Obafemi Sotunsa, Provost of the Benjamin S. Carson College of Health and Medical Sciences, was elected Secretary General of CONSAMS.
