…Chidera Duru Emmanuella Emerges Overall Best Student
Dr David Oyedepo, Chancellor and Chairman, Board Of Regents of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, has encouraged the 1,646 Bachelors and 233 higher degree graduates of the institution to take responsibility early to avoid ending up a liability.
The Chancellor spoke during the 20th convocation ceremony of the university and conferment of Bachelor’s and higher degrees on the class of 2024 graduates of the institution tagged, “The Release of Eagles 2025, held at the institution’s chapel at the weekend.
At the convocation ceremony, 1646 Bachelor’s and 233 higher degrees were awarded in various various fields. 357 of the graduands made first class, 841 second class upper division, 410 second class lower division, and 38 third class. There are 45 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D), 148 Master of Science (M.Sc), 18 Master of Engineering (M.Eng), 3 Master of Arts (M.A), and 19 Master of Business Administration (MBA).
In his message, Dr Oyedepo emphasised that a choice for capacity building in their various fields of training should be cultivated, saying the university has sincerely helped all students to build a solid foundation of life, destiny, and posterity.
“Destiny is a non-transferable responsibility. One either faces it or it is phased out. Responsibility is the price of every great destiny. Someone has said, “you are not a failure until you look for whom to blame for it.
“Here at Covenant University, we passionately seek to help students build a great future by the injection of our unique and custom-built programmes into the academic curricula of the University. The programmes include Total Man Concept (TMC), Entrepreneurial Studies (EDS), Towards a Total Graduate (TTG), and Diploma in Leadership Development.”
He added that the 20th convocation served as a reminder of commitment in the University’s third decade of existence as it looked forward to ushering the institution into global recognition and becoming a veritable springboard for sustainable national development.
Assuring parents and guardians of the commitment to maintain discipline as a watchword of the institution’s core values, Dr Oyedepo charged the graduates to rise up and salvage the image of the country and indeed the African continent.
Pastor (Mrs.) Faith Oyedepo, the Pro-chancellor, in her address, described graduation ceremonies as a beautiful moment of transition that closes one chapter and prepares the ground for another.
She said, “The certificate you receive today is not the destination; it is the beginning of a greater journey of purpose, service, and divine relevance. Your certificate is a tool, not the destination.
“Dear graduating students, let your life be a message, your work a ministry, and your success a testimony.
“To our dear parents/guardians, I say congratulations. May you continue to reap the fruits of your labour,” she added.
Professor Timothy Anake, the 6th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution announced Chidera Duru Emmanuella, a graduate of Chemical Engineering from the College of Engineering as the Overall best Student for the 20th convocation ceremony.
Chidera Duru Emmanuella scored a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.97 over 5.
He expressed appreciation to the Chancellor, Dr. David Oyedepo, or his avowed commitment to pursue excellence and extend the frontiers of the higher educational landscape in Nigeria and entire Africa.
“On this note, we remain eternally grateful to Chancellor Dr. David Oyedepo for his visionary leadership and pioneering faith at Covenant University.”
Also, the Vice chancellor thanked the Board of Regents for their well-made commitment and consistent investment in the institution and the faculty and staff for their diligence, creativity, and tireless dedication to the mission.
“You have not only taught, you have mentored. You have not only instructed, you have inspired. This graduating class is surely your destiny,” he added.
