The Federal College of Education, Technical (FCET), Akoka, on Tuesday, played host to officials from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the Resource Verification Exercise for the 27 key academic programmes offered by the foremost College.
The 27 programmes run across five faculties: Faculty of Science and Computing; Faculty of Technology; Faculty of Business and Vocational Education; Faculty of Arts, Languages and Social Sciences; and Faculty of Education.
The comprehensive Resource Verification of available human and material resources at the FCE,T, Akoka by the National Universities Commission (NUC) is in preparation for the commencement of 27 degree programmes under the College’s Dual Mode Mandate.
The NUC team, composed of experienced academics in technology and education, was steered by Dr. Esther Mmeka, who is a Director at NUC.
The team includes Prof. Musa Abdullahi Sakanko from the University of Jos, Prof. Rabiu Bello from the Federal University of Technology in Mina, Prof. Musa Baba from Taraban State University, Prof. Rekiya Muhammad Bello from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, and Mrs. Justina Emerole, who is the deputy director of NUC, Motunrayo Jolaoso and Muhammad Maiwada both from NUC.
In his welcome address, Dr. Oluwatoyin Miller, the Acting Provost of the College,
warmly welcomed the NUC Resource Verification Team to the College.
He expressed gratitude to the federal government for including the College among the fifteen institutions that have been approved to run degree programmes autonomously under the Dual Mode Mandate initiative, as stated in the Federal College of Education Act 2023.
He said, “This landmark approval is a pivotal step towards expanding access to quality teacher education and enhancing student enrolment in our programmes.
The demands of a degree education are not unfamiliar to this college. 14 degree programs are currently being run in a successful partnership with the University of Benin. I am proud to note that FCE(T), Akoka, has produced numerous First-Class graduates, many of whom are now valued academic staff members here.
Making reference to the vast human resources available at the College, the Ag. The Provost said that the institution is blessed with over 100 Ph.D. and 147 faculty members with Master’s degrees, among other experienced hands who are seasoned and qualified to implement dual mandate programs successfully and maintain the highest academic standards.
Dr. Mmeka, the NUC team leader, briefed the College management on the mission of the delegation at the College, stating that the team would be joined by Deans from all disciplines to assess what is available at the College.
The team splits into different groups after the brief meeting and moved around the various departments and faculties with their respective Deans and Head of Departments in tow.
Dr. Ayotunde Ajayi, Chairman of the Dual Mandate Committee, who also doubles as the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Computing, conducted one group through the facilities and faculty members, the College library, Faculty of Technology, and Sciences faculty.
The team was introduced and conducted round the virtual library resources, its extensive real-time resources, and e-services.
At the automobile workshop, the delegation was received by Dr Satilehin Agbejoye, the Head of Department as he provided explanations to the team’s inquiry and observations.
The team also stopped at the machine fabrication, woodworks and concrete making workshops to assess the facilities and interface with staff of the respective sections as well as assess equipment in the Faculty of Technology.
With the verification exercise underway, Dr. Miller expressed confidence that the resource verification exercise will confirm that FCE (T), Akoka, is thoroughly prepared to launch the College Dual Mode Mandate programmes.
