The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), chapter, on Sunday, announced an award of scholarships totaling N6.2 million to 31 financially disadvantaged students of the institution.
Dr. Ganiyu Yinusa, Chairperson of ASUU-OOU, in a statement, said each student received N200,000 to assist with tuition and other academic-related expenses for the 2025/2026 session.
He explained that the initiative aims to ease the financial burden on students from economically vulnerable backgrounds and promote equitable access to higher education.
He said, “The scholarship is intended to support students in meeting school fees and other approved charges, helping to prevent dropouts due to financial constraints.”
The Indigent Students Scholarship Scheme is funded through voluntary donations from University Council members’ sitting allowances, supplemented by contributions from ASUU-OOU.
Yinusa described the initiative as a reflection of the union’s commitment to student welfare, academic excellence, and social responsibility, just as he lauded the council members for their personal sacrifices.
He urged the beneficiaries to remain focused and disciplined, emphasising that the scholarships are both a support mechanism and a call to strive for excellence.
The scheme aligns with ASUU’s broader goal of ensuring that no qualified student is denied access to university education due to financial limitations, reinforcing the union’s role in promoting inclusive and sustainable education in Nigeria.
