The Central Industrial Liaison Unit of Lagos State University (LASU), on Friday, 23rd January 2026, held its 2026 Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) orientation programme for students preparing to participate in the exercise at the end of the second semester.
The programme, which was held at the Aderemi Makanjuola Lecture Theatre, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, was designed to adequately prepare students by sensitising them to the expectations, guidelines, and operational procedures of the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), with emphasis on professionalism, compliance, and effective participation throughout the training period.
Delivering the welcome address on behalf of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Afisi, who also chairs the SIWES Technical Committee, Dr A.J. Alabi described the exercise as a long-standing academic tradition and noted that the six-unit SIWES course is both mandatory and crucial to students’ professional development nationwide.
He urged participants to maintain discipline, punctuality and professionalism at their various training placements, stressing that strong performance could lead to future employment opportunities. Dr Alabi also praised the Director of the SIWES Unit, Dr Abiodun Dosu, for his proactive leadership and resilience.
In her remarks, the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) Area Manager, Dr (Mrs) Stella Titilola Baiyere, explained that the scheme was introduced in 1971 to equip students with practical skills and bridge the gap between classroom learning and the workplace. She added that ITF’s core mandate is the development of indigenous human capital.
Dr Baiyere further delivered a lecture outlining the meaning, objectives and stakeholder structure of SIWES, as well as key safety considerations. She reminded students that they represent the ITF, LASU and Nigeria, and must conduct themselves responsibly and dress appropriately.
Also speaking, the Head of Training, ITF, Mrs Veronica Travih, guided the students through the various forms required for the scheme, emphasising the importance of accurate completion to ensure proper compliance throughout the exercise.
The orientation programme adopted an interactive teaching format, with students actively engaging with the facilitators and seeking clarification during the question-and-answer session.
In attendance were the Director of the SIWES Unit, Dr Abiodun Dosu; Dr Olusegun Fajana; Dr Omolade Sanni; Dr Omolade Atofojomo; the SIWES Officer, ITF, Mrs Gloria Alonge; staff members of SIWES unit; as well as other officials.
