In a rare academic feat that has sent waves of admiration through academic circles and social media alike, twin brothers, Matthias and Matthew Busoye, have graduated with identical first-class honours from the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Ibadan, capping their undergraduate journey with a CGPA of 3.94 out of a possible 4.00.
franktalknow reports that the duo, who hail from a modest background, not only emerged best in their department but also topped the entire Faculty of Technology for the 2023/2024 academic session—an achievement the university described as “exceptional and unprecedented.”
Recounting their journey, Matthias disclosed on X (formerly Twitter) that the success was built on years of consistency and discipline.
“From our first year, we remained focused. I had 3.84 while Matthew had 3.89 in 100 level. We maintained it through every level—200, 300, 400—and finally matched each other at the 500 level with a CGPA of 3.94.”
In a separate heartfelt message, Matthew reflected on the gravity of their accomplishment during his induction speech as the best-graduating student of the faculty.
“Truth be told, this still feels surreal. My brother and I standing here today isn’t a reflection of being the most deserving or most diligent students; far from it. But for some reason, we are here,” he said.
The Society of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Students (SEEES-UI) formally celebrated the twin prodigies, honouring not just their academic achievements but their leadership as well.
Matthias served as Speaker of the 11th Assembly of the UI Students’ Representative Council, while Matthew held office as President of SEEES-UI in the same academic year.
A viral image from their graduation ceremony captured their proud mother in an emotional moment, holding their hands in prayer—a gesture that resonated with many Nigerians who praised her sacrifices and the brothers’ dedication.
“Yesterday, I had the honour of delivering the induction speech as the Best Graduating Student of the Faculty.
“Rooted in my personal journey, I shared words I hope will inspire someone to rise above present struggles and keep pushing forward.” Matthew shared.
With this remarkable milestone, the Busoye twins have not only etched their names in the annals of UI’s history, but they have also proven that excellence, when pursued with passion and purpose, can indeed run in the family.
