Nigeria’s foremost tertiary institution, the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), on Thursday, matriculated about Two Thousand (2,000) students into full-time and flexible learning programmes across various disciplines for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The Rector of the institution, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Abdul disclosed this in his address during the 2024/2025 matriculation ceremony of the college held at Dr. Philip Adegbile’s Sports Pavilion.
The Rector cautioned the freshers against indecent dress, saying such runs foul of the college code of conduct.
A breakdown of the applications and admission enumerated by the Rector “Shows that in Open Distance Learning (ODFEL), one thousand, two hundred and fifty-nine applied for the programme, (1,259) while one thousand two hundred and fifty-two (1,252) were admitted.
“In B.Sc (Ed) programmes, a total number of five hundred and ninety (590) candidates applied for the programmes, four hundred and thirty-seven (437) candidates were offered admission in the School of Technical Education in affiliation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka”.
He added that for the Higher National Diploma (HND) admission, a total number of six thousand five hundred and twenty-nine (6,529) candidates applied and only four thousand, and sixty-three (4,063) candidates were admitted, while at National Diploma (ND) level, thirteen thousand three hundred and sixty-nine (13,369) application was received and six thousand, and seventy-six (6,076) candidates were admitted, having been found successful in the Mandatory Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), saying that further screening was conducted by the College to further ascertain and strengthen the quality of candidates being admitted to the school for 2024/2025 academic session.
To the new in-takes, he said; “Our college environment is structured to support your holistic development. Our lecturers are seasoned professionals dedicated to mentoring and inspiring you. We encourage open engagement, critical inquiry, and responsible independence in learning”.
On Code of Conduct and Campus Culture, Dr. Abdul declared, “Let me remind you of some key guidelines that govern life on campus, as the college frowned at indecent dressing, which is not acceptable. We uphold high standards of discipline, including proper appearance. Dress decently and let your appearance reflect your inner values.
“A minimum of 75% class attendance is required for students to qualify for end-of-semester examinations as regular attendance is non-negotiable.”
He, however, charged the students to uphold the values of the great institution in excellence, innovation, inclusivity, integrity, and responsibility, and to build, together, a community that can be proud of.
Prof. Funsho Afolabi, the Chairman, Governing Council of the college, in his address, noted that the event is not only a moment of celebration, but a pivotal time in the College’s history as the institution is currently attaining a university status which is a bold step that reflects our commitment to national development, advanced research, and international relevance.
The transition, according to him, will provide broader academic and professional opportunities for students and help to position the institution as a world-class institution of higher learning which aligns strongly with the Federal Government’s Presidential Renewed Hope Agenda and places great emphasis on human capital development, technological innovation, and quality education as tools to reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
To the students, he admonished; “In a world that is constantly evolving, the future belongs to those who are intentional, resilient, and prepared. Use your time well here. Make use of every resource. Build meaningful relationships. Learn not just for today, but for a lifetime”.
