Principals, teachers, and school administrators in Ogun State have been charged to adopt proactive measures to safeguard lives and properties within school environments.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, gave the charge during an inspection visit to Ilugun High School, Elega Abeokuta, whose administrative block was recently vandalised by some students, stressing the need for teachers to keep students fully engaged during school hours to prevent negative influences.
Prof. Arigbabu urged teachers to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements, gatherings, or activities that could lead to unrest or destruction, advising that parents should guide their wards against vices and unruly behaviour that could jeopardise their future.
He warned that the Government would not hesitate to take firm action against individuals or groups who had the habit of destroying school facilities under the guise of protest.
Arigbabu further reiterated that, since the inception of the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration, workers’ welfare had remained a top priority, with prompt payment of workers salaries and allowances, including those of teachers.
“Government is doing its best to provide a conducive learning environment, As teachers, your responsibilities goes beyond classroom teaching but also to manage the environment.
“I urge you to rededicate yourselves, remain focused, and pay close attention to your students,” Arigbabu stated
Addressing the learners, the Commissioner disclosed that the state’s free education policy and improved school facilities were rare opportunities provided by government for them to pursue their dreams, warning that destroying infrastructure would only set back their aspirations.
