The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has charged Corps Members to view the service year not merely as a compulsory national assignment, but as a strategic platform for personal growth, nation-building and socio-economic transformation.
General Nafiu gave the charge during his official visit to the Ogun State Orientation Camp on Friday, January 30, where he addressed Corps Members participating in the 2026 Batch A Stream I Orientation Course. He explained that the NYSC Scheme was established to foster national unity by bringing young Nigerians together across ethnic, cultural and religious divides.
The NYSC helmsman urged Corps Members to take full advantage of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, describing it as a life-changing initiative capable of equipping them with practical skills for self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods beyond the service year.
He further cautioned against reckless spending and extravagant lifestyles, stressing the importance of financial discipline. According to him, prudent management of allowances would serve Corps Members well during and after their year of service. He also advised them to deploy social media responsibly and to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities.
Earlier, the Ogun State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Olayinka Diana Nasamu, warmly welcomed the Director-General and presented a detailed briefing on camp activities, outlining achievements recorded so far, challenges encountered and areas requiring further support.
A highlight of the visit was the commissioning of 500 plastic chairs donated by Climax Petroleum, a gesture facilitated through the efforts of the State Coordinator, further enhancing facilities at the Orientation Camp.
