The Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA) and Bayero University Kano (BUK) have both promoted 78 academics to the professorial cadre for the 2020/2021 academic session.
The promotion took place between November 18 and December 10, 2022.
The PUNCH had earlier reported that there was a shortage of professors in the Nigerian University System.
A ranking released by the National Universities Commission as of December 2021 also revealed that no Nigerian university had up to 50 percent professors required for a functional university system.
According to an analysis by our correspondent, BUK promoted 34 academics to the professorial cadre. Prominent among those promoted include a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Nasir Fagge who was promoted to a professor of nuclear physics.
Others include Usman Abubakar who becomes a Professor of Media Studies.
A total of 44 senior academics which include the chairperson of the ASUU, Dr. Gbolahan Bolarin at the FUTMinna were also promoted to the professorial cadre.
