The Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University, Ojo, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has charged accountants in the Country to play their parts in salvaging the economy of Nigeria at this critical point in the Country’s history.
She made the call at the opening ceremony of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) 17th Western Zonal Accountants’ Conference, which was held at ASCON, Badagry, Lagos on Tuesday.
The Vice-Chancellor who chaired the Lead Paper Session at the programme and later declared the Conference open observed that accountants are partly responsible for the precarious situation that Nigeria is currently in, and they (accountants) would also play a key role in salvaging the situation.
While commenting on the lead paper presented by the Honourable Commissioner of Finance in Lagos State, Dr. Rabiu Olowo, titled “Professional Accountants, Uncertain Economy and Sustainable Development”, Prof. Olatunji – Bello said, “Accountants who form a powerful body of professionals in the nation must be encouraged to come together at this time to proffer solutions that can salvage the economy of Nigeria from collapse.
She continued: “The social and economic tension that many Nigerians have had to face in the last few weeks are indeed enormous. I, therefore believe that this conference is coming at a most auspicious time. Accountants must engage in robust conversations on some key economic issues facing us and proffer solutions.”
“I believe that the solution to the precarious economy of Nigeria lies here, among you – accountants. And as we go into the coming elections in the coming days, I hope that the outcomes of this conference will go a long way in helping to shape the voting choice of Nigerians. This is a service to the nation and our collective prosperity depends on it.”
The lead paper presenter, Dr. Rabiu Olowo, who was represented by Prof. Godwin Oyedokun, had earlier called on participants to support the growth of the nation by applying the best professional and ethical practices in their trade, noting that there can be no development without growth.
