Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu has charged the Nigeria Association of French Teachers to continue to sensitise and encourage students on the benefits of learning the French Language.
The Commissioner, in a statement by Omoniyi Damilola and Ayoola Obadimu, Press Officers in the ministry, stated that the study of French and other foreign languages such as German, Chinese, and Spanish was important and useful for preserving linguistic diversity among the people.
“I want to urge you to continue to help us encourage our learners to study the French Language because they will derive many benefits from it and creates opportunities for younger ones in their endeavours”, he said.
Earlier in his address, the Vice President of the Association (Ijebu chapter), Mr. Raheem Toyin lauded the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for supporting French activities in schools, such as Spelling Bees, which he pointed out had helped increase enrollment and improved performance of learners sitting for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior Secondary Examination Council (WASSCE).
He called for favourable consideration of French teachers in the recruitment process, to tackle the shortage of subject teachers, more availability of french language activities in schools, extensive training of teachers for improved teaching methodology, and many more.
