Students protesting the seven-month-old lingering strike called by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday made good their threat to block some major airports.
Recall that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had over the weekend declared its intention to ground operations at all international airports in the country.
In Lagos, the students made good the threat as they blocked the access roads to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport.
The students in large numbers blocked the road from 7/8 Airport road with barricades as they call on the federal government to accede to the requests of the lecturers.
The national body of NANS which met at the weekend in Akure, Ondo State condemned the way the government is treating the lecturers as well as education in general in the country.
The aggrieved students vowed to stop international travel to make the government and upper class experience what they (students) have been going through for the previous seven months.
The chairman of NANS national taskforce on #EndASUUStrikeNow, Ojo Raymond Olumide, had said at a news conference that students were already tired of pleading with government and ASUU on ending the strike.
“We will begin another round of protests next week by storming the airspaces on Monday, September 19, 2022 to #OccupyTheAirports.
“We want to let the world know about the pains and anguish students are going through. Nigerian students whose parents create the commonwealth cannot continue to be suffering at home alongside our lecturers while the few who gain from our sweat and blood have their kids abroad jollying and flexing. We will, by this statement, not beg again. We shall be mobilizing all students to shut down the country. No Education! No Movement!”
