RISE, an initiative aimed at discovering and connecting talented young people across fields, generations and geographies to harness their collective skills for public benefit has commenced.
RISE is an initiative of Schmidt Futures and the Rhodes Trust, to find, support global talent and provide opportunities to excel.
Speaking at the Rise impact conference and launch of the 2024 cohort attended by students from different schools in Lagos, Fawzyau Danmole, Rise Communications Manager explained that the programme is open to young people ages 15 to 17 as of July 1, 2024.
She explained that the focus of the rise global challenge is to encourage a lifetime of service and learning by providing support that may include need-based scholarships, mentorship, networking, access to career development opportunities, and the potential for additional funding for participants.
She said Rise Global Winners work toward solving humanity’s most pressing problems by providing opportunities that allow them to work together to serve others over their lifetimes, find and connect talented people across fields, generations and geographies to harness their collective skills for public benefit.
“We believe that talent is equally distributed, but opportunity is not. The mission of Rise is to provide opportunities for young people in any field looking to address some of the world’s great challenges.
“To address this disparity, Rise finds promising young people and provides them with opportunities that allow them to work together to serve others over their lifetimes.”
Students ages 15 to 17 years as of July 1, 2024 have the opportunity to apply to Rise from anywhere in the world and join a community of peers and take part in specially curated opportunities from Rise’s partners around the world.
Explaining the rationale for age bracket, she said these category of young people are full of creative ideas, unhindered by the reasons something can’t be done, and are more willing to work collaboratively.
Applicants are to visit www.risefortheworld.org to apply by introducing themselves through videos, create an individual project that demonstrates their talents and benefits their communities, and peer review other applicants’ projects, among other activities.
Over the last three years, a total of 13 Nigerian students have been selected as Rise Global Winners. Among them are Ikenna Nwafor, Ogunubi, Tomisin, Naomi Obinwa among others.
Present at the event are students from Abibat Mogaji Millennium Senior Secondary school, Keke Senior High School, Govt. Snr. College Agege, and Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School.
Others are Sango Senior Secondary, Agege, State Senior High School, Oyewole and Vetland Senior Grammar School.
