As part of its strategies to accomplish its mandate, the
Nigeria Education Loan Fund
(NELFUND) is partnering with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on ways to effectively deliver on its
mandate.
The Managing Director, NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyer, in a move designed to
consolidate on measures that would make his task achievable, at the weekend paid a courtesy visit to the Registrar, JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede.
According to the NELFUND boss, the student loan scheme is flagship programme of the President Bola Tinubu’s
administration, and a cornerstone of his Renewed Hope Agenda as it is aimed at
democratising access to higher
education and empowering Nigerian youths with the tools they need to succeed in contemporary society.
He stated further that the concept of a loan scheme for students is unprecedented but is doable, noting that the scheme would have the unintended effect of forcing beneficiaries to be proactive in their choice of institution, the programme
they study and even the long-term prospects of such programmes as they would be mindful of the need to
repay their student loans.
Furthermore, he noted that the
scheme would aso afford the nation the opportunity to reshape the polity to achieve her development aspirations.
With regard to the part of the Board in the loan scheme value chain, Mr. Sawyer explained that the Board is key to the realisation of the objectives of the agency as it is the gateway to higher education in the
country.
He commended the Registrar for the various achievements recorded under his watch saying such feats are worthy of emulation.
In his remarks, the Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede expressed
appreciation to the NELFUND
management for deeming it a
worthy partner in its quest to deliver on its mandate.
He said the Board would not fail in its responsibilities and promised the unflinching
support of the Board to NELFUND so as to realise its laudable objectives.
He, however, charged the NELFUND management to be focused and demonstrate a high sense of responsibility in the course of its operations while also urging the agency to interface with the National Identity Management
Commission (NMIC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and other relevant agencies to deliver on
the well-conceived mission and
vision of the loan scheme.
