The union dug in further on Monday for an indefinite strike, after a longish meeting that stretched between Sunday evening and Monday morning following their inability to find a lasting truce with the Federal Government, over the contentious issues relating to the industrial action.
The union was said to have papered over the arguments of some of its members, who favoured the rescinding of the action at the National Executive Council (NEC), which, instead rose to up the ante, with the announcement of the new development at its headquarters of the University of Abuja on Monday morning.
It comes as the government, which announced some measures to placate the teachers, last week, including the plan to release N100billion to them, appeared to have played all its cards to obviate the situation and get them back to the classrooms, going by emerging reports.
The PUNCH, quotes spokesman of the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, as explaining that the government had taken all possible steps to end the strike, adding: “As regards the next steps, the government has already inaugurated a committee to harmonise the IPPIS and UTAS.
“If you bring some demands and almost 80 per cent have been attended to, there is no need to drag the strike anymore. It is unreasonable for the strike to be lingering seeing as the government has worked towards fulfilling most of the demands.
