The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to work out modalities for the commencement of academic activities at the Airforce University.
The House resolution was a sequel to a motion on a need to commence academic activities immediately at the Air Force University, Tafawa Balewa, brought by Hon. Jafai’aru Gambo Leko:
The Lawmaker in moving the motion
noted that in June 2019, former president Muhammadu Buhari approved the renaming of the former Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Centre, Dass, to Airforce University, Tafawa Balewa.
He also noted that the Airforce University was established to promote education and to foster wide-range research geared towards combating new and unknown security challenges that the 21st century presents.
Hon. Jafai’aru Leko recalled that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) made full compensations for the Abubakar Tafawa University Centre and handed the Centre over to the Nigerian Airforce to be converted to Airforce University, Tafawa Balewa.
According to the Lawmaker, “In addition to boosting tertiary education, the Airforce University intends to cushion the effect of insecurity in the area through the Special Forces Unit to be established, therein and expressed worries that the Airforce University is yet to commence academic activities for no reason.
He expressed concerns that economic and commercial activities across communities in Dass/Bogoro/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency, which should receive a boost as a result of a fully functional Airforce University have been stalled and its structures left to rot.
In adopting the motion, the House therefore, urged the Federal Ministry of Education and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to brief the Committee on University Education on the causes of the delay in the commencement of academic activities at the Airforce University, Tafawa Balewa.
It also mandated the Committees on University Education, Airforce and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance.
