The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Igbinedion University, Okada, IUO, Edo State has commenced the design and fabrication and eventual manufacturing of light weight electric vehicles.
Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonyen, Vice Chancellor of the University who disclosed this at the 25th matriculation ceremony of Nigeria’s Premier Private University said there will be periodic public lectures at various phase of the project.
Prof. Ezemonyen who said the students of the department of Mechanical Engineering are expected to come up with research projects at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, just as he announced that the National Universities Commission, NUC, has given approval to the University to commence Distance Learning Programme.
According to him, the Distance Learning Programme of Igbinedion University has commenced in earnest following its approval by the National Universities Commission and has taken off with B.Sc. Accounting.
“Other programmes which will soon be introduced under the second phase include B.Sc. Nursing Sciences, B.Sc. Computer Science, Master in Business Administration (MBA), Master in Public Health (MPA), etc.
“The programme, established under the Centre for Distance Learning is aimed at providing flexible and accessible learning opportunities to wider range of students who may not be able to attend traditional on-campus classes.
“This initiative aligns with Igbinedion University’s commitment to expanding educational access and ensuring quality learning experiences. This will enable individuals from different background and geographical locations to pursue their educational aspirations without the constraints of physical attendance”.
Speaking on what he described as”Future Ready Students” Ezemonyen said, “realizing that the jobs and challenges of the future may be vastly different from those of today, Igbinedion University deliberately emphasizes the importance of cultivating versatile, agile learners who can thrive in diverse environments and contribute positively to society in an ever-evolving landscape.
“Thus, we prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing world and effectively navigate the challenges and opportunities of the future.
“Our students are equipped not only with academic knowledge but also with critical thinking abilities, creativity, adaptability, problem-solving skills, digital literacy, communication skills, collaboration skills, cultural competency, and a strong sense of resilience.
“Master classes with industry facilitators feature regularly and forms part of our curricula which is aimed at exposing the students to life skills set beyond the theory, leveraging on industry-academia interface.

The VC also spoke on the essence of matriculation, noting that matriculation ceremony of University is a significant and symbolic event in the life of every university, pointing out that it not only signifies the formal induction of new students into the academic community but also represents the beginning of a transformative journey.

Admonishing the new students earlier, the Chancellor of the University, Chief (Dr) Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, represented by the Deputy Chancellor, Chief Dr. Lucky Igbinedion, former governor of Edo State, urged the students to be focused in their studies, describing the University as a place of excellence where they would be exposed to all good things of life.
The matriculation lecture, entitled: “Innovation and Creativity in A Digital World: Future Ready Tool Kit”was delivered by the Guest Speaker, Mr Darlington Onyeagoro.
