Education is essential for the growth and development of any nation, hence the need to publish books to ensure a proper foundation for learners.
The Special Adviser to the Governor of Ogun State on Primary and Secondary Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, stated this during the launch of the Midas Literacy Textbook, at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Mrs. Soyombo said the launch of the Textbook was borne out of her passion and commitment to improving literacy and learning in both public and private primary schools across the nation.
She noted that English Language occupies a pride of place, not only in the existence of Nigeria as a Nation which comprises various ethnic and linguistic groups, but also in all her development efforts, expressing dissatisfaction over learners. who cannot confidently express themselves in English.
“The pedagogical role of literacy in school requires that learners are proficient enough to understand the content of other school subjects taught in English and failure in other school subjects is occasioned by failure in the language of instruction which is English”, she said.
Contributing, Chairman of the occasion, Chief Dele Fajemirokun, stated that Soyombo’s resounding academic prowess and experience were needed at the federal level to promote education with enlightenment, sound values, positivity, ethical standards, innovations and a practical attitude.
Also speaking, the National Treasurer of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Segun Raheem, described the author as eloquent, highly diligent, humble, a goal-getter and a visionary leader, whose tenure as the Director-General of Quality Assurance of Schools in Lagos improved the dignity and pride of teachers.
While reviewing the books for primaries 1 to 6, Ogun State Chairman, Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), Comrade Dauda Sanusi, the Chairman APC Professional Women Council, UK, Mrs. Tokunbo Olunloyo and a teacher, Mr. Titus Bankole, commended the author for coming up with ideas capable of improving learners’ grammar, vocabularies, diction and writing skills.
