Protocols,

Today offers us yet another wonderful opportunity to celebrate the outstanding men and women in the noble profession that shaped the minds of our past and have continued to shape the minds of our present and future generations. I join parents, students, and all stakeholders in the education sector in honoring our teachers, who ignite curiosity, inspire greatness, and leave a lasting impact that drives the pursuit of knowledge.

The theme of today’s celebration, “Valuing Teachers’ Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” calls for a paradigm shift in policy perspectives by acknowledging the critical importance of including teachers in the process of education policymaking.

The call to Value the voices of teachers is a call to action. It means rewarding their tireless efforts, unwavering dedication, and selfless commitment. The role of a teacher extends far beyond the classroom, they inspire, guide, and mentor students, shaping them into active citizens and future leaders. It also equips them with unique insights that is valuable in navigating the complexities of modern education governance.

Here in Lagos State, we do not only value the voices of our teachers; we embed their input into every aspect of our education governance. From ideation to policy formulation and implementation, the contributions of teachers are integral.

Our commitment to professionalism in education policy and administration is evident in our efforts to ensure teachers reach the pinnacle of their profession. We have institutionalized a system where only career teachers who rise to the post of principal become Tutors-General/Permanent Secretaries in the State Public Service.

This decade-old policy has been a game changer in Lagos State, fostering industrial harmony in the education sector, with visible results for all to see.

The continuous employment of qualified teachers at all levels is an ongoing process, reducing the shortage of these unsung heroes.

The value in recognizing the vital contributions of our Teachers in developing curriculum and improving instructional methods, providing emotional support, Guidance and counseling, Fostering an inclusive learning environment, and embracing Technology to enhance qualitative education, cannot be over- emphasized.

To these incredible individuals, I express my deepest gratitude for your passion and perseverance, your creative approaches to making learning engaging, your unwavering commitment to the success of our students, and for being role models and change agents.

We truly appreciate your patience, understanding, and dedication to your calling. This administration will continue to support you by providing adequate resources for your development and retraining.

We will keep improving infrastructure to facilitate effective teaching, collaborate with stakeholders to enhance the quality of education, and continue to recognize and reward outstanding teaching practices.

I urge you to remain steadfast in your mission of imparting knowledge and continue to help our children build brighter futures for themselves, for Lagos State, and for the nation.

I thank you for listening. Have a wonderful celebration.

Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu
Governor of Lagos State.
