Former Provost of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, NIJ, Lagos, Chief Dayo Michael Duyile, is among 65 people who will bag Doctor of Philosophy degree during the 53th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Lagos, UNILAG.
Duyile, 83, will bag his degree in Mass Communication. He is the oldest person among the graduands.
Disclosing this on Tuesday, the Vice Chancellor, UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, said the special convocation would only witness the award of diplomas and degrees to postgraduate students.
” The event is in continuation of the celebration of the 60 anniversary of our great university. We have a total of 2,251 graduands with 67 to be awarded postgraduate diplomas in various fields. 2,119 are getting master’s degree in various fields, while 65 will bag PhD degree. It gives a total of 2,251 graduands.
“The Best PhD student is Yinusa Ahmed Amoo, from the Mechanical Engineering Department. This year, we have the oldest graduand as Dayo Michael Duyile, 83, who is getting a PhD in Mass Communication.
He worked in various places including the Daily Times Newspaper and incidentally, he was the reporter that covered the inauguration of the University of Lagos some 60 years ago.
“The oldest female graduating student is Okonji Regent Ovbiageli, 82, who is getting a master’s degree in Guidance and Counselling,”she said.
Ogunsola added that as part of the ceremony, two professors in the institution would be awarded Gold Medal for their immense contributions to education and academia.
They are Professors Johnson Olaleru and Duro Oni.
Also, the VC said a telemedicine centre donated to the university by Sir Adebutu Kessington would be inaugurated at the College of Medicine, Idi Araba.
Speaking on her plans for the university, Ogunsola said she would focus on the theme of the 60th anniversary celebration which is “Eyes on the future.”
She added that despite dwindling resources, the management of the university would not relent in training students that would shape their society in positive manners.
